The 7th Wantage Shotokan Kata and Kumite Competition was held on Sunday 11th October 2009 with over 155 individual entries and over 20 team entries for juniors, cadets and adults in kata and kumite categories. The competition attracted entries from the like minded traditional associations as the TSKA, KUGB, JKAE and SSKA member clubs based in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Kent and Devon. Competitors also took part from the British Combat Association and the Central England Shotokan Karate Association, Northampton.

Excellent examples of successful technically challenging kumite techniques and outstanding Kata performances were noted throughout the day. The collective decision made by the Officials for ‘Technique/performance of the day’ was awarded to Adrian Rayment from Margate TSKA for the brilliant execution of a double legged ashi barai and gedan gyaku tzuki combation which he performed on three separate occasions during the day. This just edging it from two jodan mawashi geri from Tom Watson, Devon TSKA and a jodan ura mawashi geri from Ian Pettifer, Thatcham JKAE.

The ‘Karate-ka of the Day’ for the best overall competitor that had entered all available kata, kumite and team events was awarded to 14 year old Edward Thorund Grant, Tonbridge TSKA. Edward achieved 1st place in the Boys over 150cm kumite beating a very spirited competitor, 1st place in the junior individual kata over 140cm 3rd kyu & above and 2nd in the junior team kata.

Points were awarded to each club based on the cumulative individual and team results of club members from the various categories. The totals were ranked giving the overall club winner. An impressively large KUGB team (Cando Martial Arts) carried off the Club Championships with a similar sized Margate TSKA team coming second and Tonbridge TSKA taking third.
